Rızvanoğlu Calls for Stronger Global Cooperation Among Women Leaders on Climate Crisis
<p>Evrim Rızvanoğlu, Deputy Chair of the Republican People’s Party (CHP) responsible for Nature Rights and Environmental Policies, called on women politicians worldwide to strengthen collaboration to address the climate crisis. Speaking at the international panel titled “Planning for the Next Crisis: Why Women’s Leadership Matters in Climate Foresight and Policy,” organized by the Women Politicians Combatting Global Warming Platform (WPGW), she highlighted the importance of coordinated global political engagement.</p><p></p><p>Rızvanoğlu stressed that existing political systems alone are not sufficient to tackle the climate emergency effectively and emphasized the need for stronger international coordination among women policymakers. She noted that an important step toward this goal was taken in Istanbul on 16 April 2026.</p><p></p><p>The meeting brought together prominent policymakers, including Gabriela Morawska-Stanecka from Poland, Dionysia-Theodora Avgerinopoulou from Greece, Wera Hobhouse from the United Kingdom, Daan Roovers from the Netherlands, and Tina Blohm, Country Director of Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung Türkiye.</p><p></p><p>According to Rızvanoğlu, the Women Politicians Combatting Global Warming Platform provides an international framework that enables women politicians from different political backgrounds and regions to work together toward common climate policy objectives. She underlined that cooperation across political and geographical boundaries is essential to transform individual efforts into collective political impact.</p><p></p><p>Rızvanoğlu highlighted research showing that women often demonstrate greater awareness of environmental risks and tend to support earlier, more proactive policy responses. She also pointed to United Nations data indicating that women and children face greater risks during extreme weather events, which further motivates women leaders to take action on climate policy.</p><p></p><p>Emphasising the importance of inclusive decision-making, she noted that stronger representation of women in policymaking processes contributes to more effective climate governance and improves societies’ capacity to adapt to climate change.</p><p></p><p>Participants also underlined the importance of stable and long-term climate policy frameworks. Wera Hobhouse emphasized the role of strong legal and institutional mechanisms in supporting climate commitments. Gabriela Morawska-Stanecka highlighted the relationship between climate change, migration, and social resilience. Daan Roovers highlighted the challenge of aligning long-term climate goals with short electoral cycles. Dionysia-Theodora Avgerinopoulou stressed the importance of science-based policymaking and stronger representation of women in decision-making processes.</p><p></p><p>The meeting concluded with a shared message emphasizing the need for durable, binding, and forward-looking climate policies supported by international cooperation.</p>
